📅 Islamic Months – Full Details

The Islamic calendar (Hijri) is a lunar calendar of 12 months and 354–355 days per year. It began with the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah (622 CE).

1. Muharram (المحرّم)

Meaning: Forbidden. Sacred month. Includes Ashura (10th), when Imam Hussain (RA) was martyred. Fighting is prohibited.

2. Safar (صفر)

Meaning: Empty. Misunderstood as unlucky, but this has no basis in Islam. Many early battles occurred in this month.

3. Rabi' al-Awwal (ربيع الأول)

Meaning: First Spring. Birth and death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Celebrated as Mawlid in many cultures.

4. Rabi' al-Thani (ربيع الآخر)

Meaning: Second Spring. A time of continued peace and teachings of Islam.

5. Jumada al-Awwal (جمادى الأولى)

Meaning: First of Parched Land. Typically dry. Some important Islamic battles took place during this month.

6. Jumada al-Thani (جمادى الآخرة)

Meaning: Second of Parched Land. Fatima (RA), daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, passed away in this month.

7. Rajab (رجب)

Meaning: Honor. Sacred month. Isra and Mi’raj took place. Time for increased worship and reflection.

8. Sha'ban (شعبان)

Meaning: Scattering. The Prophet ﷺ fasted frequently. The 15th night is significant in some traditions.

9. Ramadan (رمضان)

Meaning: Burning heat. The most blessed month. Qur’an revealed. Laylat al-Qadr occurs. Fasting is obligatory.

10. Shawwal (شوّال)

Meaning: Uplifted. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated. Fasting 6 days after Ramadan brings great reward.

11. Dhu al-Qi'dah (ذو القعدة)

Meaning: Month of Rest. One of the four sacred months. Peaceful period leading to Hajj.

12. Dhu al-Hijjah (ذو الحجة)

Meaning: Month of Pilgrimage. Hajj occurs. Eid al-Adha is celebrated. First 10 days are the most virtuous.

Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. Fighting is forbidden during these months (Qur'an 9:36).

The Hijri calendar is lunar (354–355 days); Gregorian is solar (365–366 days). The Hijri system governs Islamic rituals like Ramadan, Eid, and Hajj.
